Smartbyte is an application developed by Rivet Networks LLC. The most common release is 1.1.502, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. During setup, the program registers itself to launch on boot through a Windows Schedule Task in order to automatically start-up. Upon being installed, the software adds a Windows Service which is designed to run continuously in the background. Manually stopping the service has been seen to cause the program to stop functioning correctly. It adds a background controller service that is set to automatically run. Delaying the start of this service is possible through the service manager. The setup package generally installs about 52 files and is usually about 20.51 MB (21,509,239 bytes). Relative to the overall usage of those who have this connected, most are running it on Windows 8. While about 76% of users of SmartByte Drivers and Services come from the United States, it is also popular in United Kingdom and Italy. What is Smartbyte and what does it do?
What is Smartbyte?
Smartbyte is software that helps spend less time buffering and more time enjoying your favorite videos, which delivers incredible streaming and interactive video performance. By detecting and prioritizing your critical video traffic, SmartByte automatically ensures that less critical network traffic will not slow down or degrade the quality of the videos you watch.
The SmartByte software is designed to work on both Intel and Realtek networking options offered in the Inspiron range, which leads to one obvious question which I put to Rivet Network: if you can do this all in software, why bother offering a real Killer network solution at all? We were told that the physical solution allows for greater offload and packet examination, both freeing up resources and reducing latency, as well as tracking metrics better for optimization and a few other internal tweaks. The SmartByte software works primarily for video only, and will just work for select system IDs (so there is no instance to install on other machines). Rivet stated that the requirements for this software were for it to be simple, as in ‘one-button’ simple if a user wanted to disable it for some reason.
Key Features:
- Video Detection: SmartByte automatically detects which network packets are for your streaming and interactive videos.
- Video Prioritization: SmartByte prioritizes streaming and interactive video packets above other, less critical network traffic on your computer.
- Automatic Bandwidth Detection: SmartByte automatically determines how much internet bandwidth your computer has access to.
Smartbyte Dell?
Smartbyte Diagnostic by Rivet Networks was recently contracted by Dell on May 30, 2018, for their Inspiron machines. Purportedly it is used to increase video bandwidth! It is automatically generated through Dell updates or support. It was recently added to Dell updates! It is my experience that it will continue to load if it is not found on the target system. Malwarebytes has to talk Dell and test the application
At a high level, this is prioritization software aimed squarely for Dell’s business customers and moving to make video the more top priority for network traffic, especially when other software is using the network. In the metrics given for the software, it was claimed that with a concurrent download in place, whereas a base system would only offer a 320×180 Skype video call with 14% lost data packets, with SmartByte in place the system could support 960×540 video with zero lost packages and a 40-50% lower ping. Similarly, when trying to stream video online while hitting the limit on an internet connection, the SmartByte software should give zero stream freezes.
